About Hurricane Hams
Around 2015, Julio Ripoll, Assistant Coordinator for WX4NHC at the National Hurricane Center, introduced the name “Hurricane Hams” as an informal way to identify members of WX4NHC, the Hurricane Watch Net, and the VoIP Hurricane Net. Over time, the term grew into a widely recognized and respected nickname for amateur radio operators dedicated to hurricane preparedness and those who take to the airwaves during landfalling storms.
In mid-2025, Bobby Graves, Net Manager of the Hurricane Watch Net, saw the potential to grow Hurricane Hams into something more—a unifying brand for the amateur radio community involved in tropical weather operations. Today, Hurricane Hams represents a collective effort that includes organizations such as the Hurricane Watch Net, VoIP Hurricane Net, WX4NHC, and SATERN–bringing together hurricane specialists, emergency managers, and amateur radio operators working in coordination before, during, and after storms.
Through this collaboration, Hurricane Hams helps tell the story of real-time storm response, shares knowledge and best practices, and highlights the operators, nets, and activations that make a difference when it matters most. It also supports outreach, public awareness, and recruitment, ensuring that the tradition of service continues to grow with the next generation of radio operators. |
